I'm Joel, from Northern Ireland, and I've needed glasses since I was young. I've also always loved being in the water. The two don't mix well. Contact lenses were never for me, so my time in the sea was a blur, and I missed a lot of what I was there to see.

I've snorkelled a lot in Australia, and the reef is the one place you really want to see properly. But with tour groups it was always the same story. I'd have to check ahead that they carried prescription masks, and when they did, the mask was usually old and scuffed, close to my prescription but never quite right. Some wanted a security deposit on top. I was standing on the boat, paying to borrow a mask that didn't really work, about to look at one of the most beautiful places in the world through the wrong lenses.

At home it wasn't much better. I tried a lot of prescription goggles and masks over the years, and I paid through the roof for them. Too often the price had little to do with the quality. So I started asking questions. I did the research, spoke directly with suppliers, and learned what separates a mask that's genuinely good from one that's just expensive.
